The Addis Ababa Media Council has officially submitted a formal complaint to Australian authorities, including the Australian Federal Police and the Department of Home Affairs Border Watch and Character Division. This filing addresses genocidal statements made by Mr. Tsegaye Ararssa during an interview on the Oromia Media Network. The Council requested an investigation under laws against foreign violence incitement, hate speech, and armed group support, alongside a character review under Section 501 of Australia’s Migration Act 1958.

This action was necessary because Mr. Ararssa endorsed violent actions targeting Addis Ababa and its residents, creating a threat of ethnic conflict. The interview included references indicating connections to non-state combatants, escalating the rhetoric to an active security threat. Furthermore, Mr. Ararssa continues to be publicly presented under the title of Doctor despite holding a Master of Laws without a completed doctorate, misrepresenting his academic authority to intimidate diaspora members with differing views.

The Addis Ababa Media Council calls on the public, civil society groups, and the Ethiopian diaspora to take active steps against violent, genocidal rhetoric. Community members in Australia and globally should report broadcasts containing incitement directly to regulatory bodies, human rights agencies, and digital platforms. Media organizations must stop misrepresenting personal credentials, and the diaspora should engage peacefully while rejecting attempts to link civic rights to ethnic identity.
